The Bravest Guy At {Exhale} Barre Class

The Bravest Guy At {Exhale} Barre Class

I have been on a mission to get in shape since July 2013, and trying out local boutique gyms in Soho ever since.  Most of the class packages I buy are off of Gilt City (I’ve also used Groupon, Living Social and Rue La La).  In NYC we are spoiled, and every boutique gym wants to have a location in Soho, so I am even more spoiled.

I bought a 10 class package to Exhale, a spa which offers Barre Classes all over the city, including Soho (68 Spring Street near the Spring Street 6 Train).  Last week I realized 6 of the 10 classes were expiring this week and I aggressively scheduled classes over the past few days.  During the Core Fusion Barre Class last night (1/20/2014) a first happened for me…I saw the first guy at class!

The Exhale website can be deceiving:  they show male athletes in Barre positions.  However, I have never seen a guy in class until last night.  I don’t know if he knew what he was getting himself into (re: a class full of girls) when he walked up the stairs.  I overheard him telling the instructor that his girlfriend told him he should try it out (she wasn’t with him).  Maybe she was playing a joke on him?  I have tried getting my boyfriend to come to Barre class with me, and he always says “no” based on the perception that its “for girls only.”  There is a huge opportunity to try to market Barre classes to men.  It would also be fun to see my boyfriend do butt and glute excercises on a ballet bar.  :)

Barre Classes are designed to give a long, lean dancer-like physique and combine Pilates, yoga and ballet moves.  There are several Barre classes in Soho:  The Bar Method, Physique 57, and Exhale.

Bar Method Soho LogoI tried The Bar Method classes for a month in November 2013 (the first month is $195) and loved it!  It is also the closest gym to my apartment so it was convenient training myself to go to the before-work classes.  They have amazing morning classes (6:15 and 6:30) which fill up quick and one of my favorite parts was that they brew coffee to take with you after class.  The monthly price goes up to $270 and since I’m still trying out several gyms, it is hard for me to commit.

Physique 57 Soho LogoI haven’t tried Physique 57 classes, but they are on my “to-do” list and am on the lookout for Gilt City discounts (hint hint).

Exhale Soho LogoAfter attending several Exhale classes, it was easy to book classes since none of the classes filled up.  They also have 3 evening class times that work with my schedule:   5:40, 6:50, and 8:00.  The only downside to the Exhale Soho location is the size.  The website refers to it more of a “pop-up” style store.  They suggest to pack light because there are no lockers or showers.
