Insider’s Guide: Alexis – Doorman At SoHo Mews

We are starting a new series on Soho Strut called “Insider’s Guide” where residents, businesses and employees in SoHo give their perspective on the best spots in the neighborhood.

We visited an open house at 311 West Broadway and met Alexis, who has been the doorman at SoHo Mews for the past 3 years.

SoHo Mews

SoHo Mews is a popular condo residence for celebrities, because of its low-key charm (private parking, proximity to Canal Street, private back entrance).  While Alexis couldn’t confirm, Justin Timberlake, Holger Bartel (Travelzoo exec), Oscar De La Renta and Vikram Chatwal (Dream Hotel) are all rumored to be residents (as you can read by the linked public articles).

One of Alexis’ go-to spots is Lucky Strike on Grand Street, a restaurant that has been around SoHo since 1989.  He highly recommends the burgers {the menu is both American & French and is a local SoHo “Cheers” bar}.

Opened by Keith McNally and Edward Youkilis in 1989, Lucky Strike is a casual downtown bistro serving American Continental and French food. Guests can enjoy lunch, brunch, dinner and late night supper throughout the lively dining room. A full menu is also available at the French copper bar.

Another of’ popular lunch destination is Lupes on 6th Avenue.  Lupes is a Mexican restaurant that coins themself an “East LA Kitchen”.  Alexis frequents Lupes several times a week and gets their burritos and tacos.  The vibe is very “LA” and in the summer, there is outdoor seating.

The third place Alexis recommends is Pepolino on West Broadway which named after a variety of thyme that grows wild in Tuscany.  In August 1999, Patrizio and Enzo opened the doors of Pepolino with Tuscan signature dishes including fettuccine with clams, cannellini and Alexis’ favorite, stuffed mushrooms that aren’t on the menu.
