While We Were Sleeping…Kate’s Paperie Closed
The battle for where we buy our cards became a little less competitive. Kate’s Paperie which was on Broome Street and moved a little less than a year ago around the corner to Lafayette Street, is closed. In a Crain’s article from 2011, it spoke about Kate’s fight for survival. A business woman purchased the company at a premium, and hasn’t been able to compete in the spaces with Papyrus and Paper Source.
I have stopped by and called the store on several occasions, but the customer service lacked in comparison to my favorite local stationary supplier, Paper Source. While I still purchase cards from Papyrus, there is something “homey” about Paper Source – like their community calendar and easily accessible colored envelopes in all shapes and sizes.
The employees at Kate’s Paperie have mostly transitioned to the new store, which is called Galerie 188. Galerie 188 looks like a hodgepodge of stationary store, pop-up gift store, and chinatown discount store.
