Kiehl’s Nolita Flagship Is Now Open!
The Kiehl’s Nolita Flagship Is Now Open! Kiehl’s is a natural skin care line that opened another flagship location in Nolita yesterday, July 12, 2014. Of course Soho Strut was invited to the opening party!
The launch party last night was packed. Here are a few pictures from the outside:
The first 50 people in the store won a grab-bag with free products. I didn’t want to wait in line, so didn’t participate in the festivities. I already have plenty of Kiehl’s products – their products at the Equinox locker rooms got me hooked!
Kiehl’s originated as a pharmacy in the East Village near Thirteenth Street and Third Avenue in 1851. The original location is still open and currently sells their products in a variety of locations in addition to their flagship stores (Equinox, Bloomingdales, Saks, and Neiman Marcus to name a few).
There have been several notable events over the past 160 years:
- 1894, John Kiehl purchased the Brunswick Apotheke and re-names it to Kiehl Pharmacy
- 1921, Irving Morse purchases the pharmacy from Kiehl and develops the “Musk Oil” formula
- 1961, Morse’s son takes over the business and introduces men’s-only products
- 1964, Andy Warhol has an astringent that is launched, the “Blue Astringent”
Kiehl’s competes with the likes of Aveda, Bumble and Bumble, and other drug store brands like Bed Head and Paul Mitchell. With the competition, it seems like there must be new management because Kiehl’s has been actively working to increase their distribution network over the past few years.
