Scholastic To Close Their Retail Store In SoHo January 2015…
Scholastic announced their earnings and as part of their results, the CEO announced they will be closing their retail store at 557 Broadway this month!
This announcement was made on December 18th, and we haven’t heard any word in the neighborhood as to the sentiment of losing a neighborhood staple for children.
Maureen O’Connell, the CFO announced:
Moving on to an update on real estate, as you know we are redesigning and reconfiguring the ground floor of our 557, Broadway Headquarters in an effort to maximize the value of the retail component of the building. As a result we will close our SoHo retail store by mid-January 2015. We are excited by the prospect of this premium retail space and will provide a more detailed update on our plans at the end of the fiscal year.
I visited the SoHo retail store a few months ago and met the store manager, Michael, who had been loyal to the store for 14 years! Michael was instrumental in the annual Halloween parties as well as hosting children’s birthday parties and weekend events.
Growing up, my father used to braid our hair using the Klutz series “Braids & Bows”.
Growing up, almost every birthday and hannukah was filled with Klutz gifts…visiting the Scholastic store brought me back to some of my childhood memories of Koosh, Juggling, Friendship Bracelets and Nail Art.
The Scholastic Store closing is a loss to SoHo and families with young children.
What do you think of this space closing?
