Fitness Hipsters: Meet Strengthen. Lengthen. Tone. In Soho.
After starting SOHOstrut, the growing trend of boutique gyms and workout classes became more apparent. I don’t know when the trend started (Soulcycle and Bar Method?) but there is definitely a boutique gym movement happening in NYC and specifically Soho.
I also discovered that people who love working out at boutique gyms and workout classes are called “Fitness Hipsters“. It is my goal to find the best boutique gyms in Soho. Fitness Hipsters: Meet Strengthen. Lengthen. Tone. In Soho.
After reading several articles from the NY Times, Marie Claire, Details, and Fitness Hipster, it was evident that “SLT” which stands for “Strengthen. Lengthen. Tone.” might be the next cult-like workout regimen. (Rumor has it the 10:30 am classes on the weekdays are filled with models.)
I had to check it out–I want to look like a model. The first class is only $20 and all single classes after are $40 (10 sessions for $360). For pricing see here. It is definitely worth the $20 for the first time (classes get booked over a week in advance so plan accordingly!)
SLT in NYC was created by fitness entrepreneur Amanda Freeman who heard about a trendy workout routine combining pilates, cardio and strength-training called SLT in Los Angeles. She decided to bring SLT to Soho, filling the loft-like gym with 10 workout machines called the Megaformer™ (a machine created by Lagree Fitness).
The classes incorporate principles of core stability blending with the fusion of muscle dynamics using resistance and counter-resistance with springs and pulleys. These machines are supposedly the next evolution of traditional Pilates reformer machines.
I went to the Sunday 9:30AM class which was originally sold out but SLT put me on the wait list and got into the class. Even if the class appears full online you should sign up for the waitlist! Jay C. was my instructor, who looks like a model himself. He pushed my body in ways that it had never been pushed, doing so with a smile and a wink. I was sore for three days after and wanted more. I am now one step closer to being a fitness hipster and looking like a model!
