‘sNice On Sullivan Street Closed Mysteriously

'sNice Sullivan Street

I walked past ‘sNice, a vegetarian/vegan cafe & sandwich shop last week on Sullivan Street and it was completely empty!  Not a table, stool…nothing!  I emailed the store a week and a half ago and haven’t heard back from them, but I’m surprised there is nothing posted by anyone else about the mysterious closing.

While there are still several other ‘sNice locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, I only went to the one in my ‘hood and am pretty devastated it closed.  I always looked forward to their vegan carrot cake cupcake.  I’m far from a vegan, but this cupcake was amazing.  They also showcased local art:

There have been a lot of rumors on this block about redevelopment.  Supposedly a developer is in talks to build a large condo building on a sliver of a lot owned by St. Anthony’s Church and has been buying up buildings nearby and raising the retail rents on the local businesses.  The first victim was Joe’s Dairy back in May 2013, a store that made delicious smoked mozzarella that I still miss dearly…

Once Upon A Tart was rumored to be closing as well, but fortunately that hasn’t happened.  Jean Claude which closed, is now re-opened as Navy, which probably means the landlord raised the original rent and found a tenant willing to shell out more $$.

Sullivan Street is located in the “South Village‘ which borders the “Soho Cast Iron District“.  The South Village was approved as a historic district, but some of the streets have not been approved to be preserved.  There has been a race of developers buying empty lots and buildings with hopes to start construction projects before they can no longer build large projects.

This has lead to the new construction at One Vandam, 73-75 Sullivan, 10 Sullivan, and the list goes on.
