Two More Soho Restaurants Are Closing: Mezzogiorno & Costata

After writing last week that Le Petit Cafe and Snack closed, with Cafe Borgia and Le Pescadeux closing a few months ago, it was surprising to hear that Mezzogiorno closed December 23 and the NY Times article confirmed that Costata is closing 12/31.

I always wondered when Costata would close.  Ever since the Italian restaurant opened, I rarely saw a crowd.  The location has consistently struggled with customers as it was previously owned and operated by BR Guest (Dos Caminos, Blue Water Grill) who decided to leave the location and sublease to one of their former chefs Michael White (Altamarea Group).

Mezzogiorno, another Italian restaurant around the corner from Costata, has been around since the 1990’s.  Rumors from someone who lives in the building said the landlord is asking $45,000 per month upon their lease renewal.  For a restaurant that is mostly busy in the summer and not so much in the winter, this rent seems very high. Unfortunately Mezzogiorno’s website confirms that they moved locations to the Upper West Side and closed their Soho location 12/23.

How many more restaurants will close in 2016?  Will other restaurants try to open?  Sadelle’s seems to be doing quite well – perhaps other non-Italian restaurants will fare better?
